Prep to Paint

All damage to the walls must be patched and sanded before painting to get a smooth finished product. All furniture must be moved and carpets covered. All base trim must be taped with a flex blade, you just can't beat gravity. We prep the job properly. We do ask homeowner to remove as much breakable and irreplaceable items as possible, we can move all the heavy stuff with our furniture movers.

Technique is crucial

When we cut in, we smooth out the paint to prevent any brush marks from showing once the paint is finished. A sure sign of a professional painter is wide cut in lines. A narrow cut in line will create ridges and marks that will be visible once the paint has dried. This will also prevent any "picture frame" effects where you can see a different texture around the edges of the walls, sockets, switches and vents.

Straight lines are Stunning

A professional painter can not only cut in lines by hand that will be much straighter than any tape line, he can do it with either hand. This pic shows the existing paint (darker) that was taped, and the new paint done by hand. Notice the waves on the darker paint that was taped. This is caused by not applying the tape with a flex blade.

The right tool for the job

We use an 18 inch roller. Notice that the frame to the roller is solid on both sides. This prevents any "roller lines" from appearing in the paint that are very common with 9 inch rollers. The 9 inch roller has a frame on only one side causing all the force to be applied to that one side. This results in a thick line of paint that will be visible when the paint has dried.

The finished Product

The finished product should be visually stunning if done with the right technique and proper tools. This room is painted in eggshell. Notice the walls are completely smooth from top to bottom and side to side with no visible brush strokes or roller lines.

What about the high entry way walls

With the proper technique and tools even the high, hard to paint entry walls will finish completely smooth from top to bottom and side to side. Even if the sun shines directly on it.

Fixing poor tape lines

Often times when using tape you get a poor line, the paint will stop too far up or down the wall or the paint will get under the tape because it was not applied with a flex blade.

Tricks of the Trade

A very easy trick to repair a poor painting cut in line is to apply caulk using a special technique. This will cover the poor tape line, create a new straight line, and cover the crack or seam making the wall appear monolithic. Now the trim is ready to be touched up or painted.
